Does Google Earth really cost $150 million a year?

Posted by | Uncategorized | Monday 4 August 2008 4:58 pm

Over at 24/7 Wall St. Douglas McIntyre is speculating that Google Earth costs “at least $150 million a year.”  Wow.  Here’s the rest:
Google Earth is about .15% of the parent company’s visits, but it is almost certainly a much larger portion of the firm’s cost base. Google claims that over 400 million people have activated this product worldwide. Google Earth has a number of complex software features which are expensive to maintain on servers. These include 3D renderings of a tremendous number of buildings around the world, swoop navigation which allows 360 degree views of buildings and streets, and the ability to watch sunrise and sunset from almost any position in the world. The storage and rendering of all of this satellite and photo data has to be immensely expensive, probably at least $150 million a year. Shave $1 billion of Google’s market cap for Earth.

Do not have children

Posted by | Uncategorized | Monday 4 August 2008 4:57 pm

Observing a family with two small kids, setting up a tent next to our camper during our short adrenaline vacation in Slovenian mountains (rafting, high ropes, canyoning, paragliding, bungee – verdict: canyoning most enjoyable, bungee most terrifying, paragliding possible future), I remembered a post by my blogging friend Robin Eastonon how families with small children are often being looked down upon and avoided in camps, everybody fearing that their vacation is going to be disturbed. So, I immediately decided to not fall into this trap (as I actually even vowed to in my comment to Robin’s post) and be positive and open towards them.
But, oh boy, did that prove to be a difficult task in the next couple of days.
Kids were about 2 and 4 and they were crying ALL THE TIME. Parents were a young and completely depressed couple, just attempting to switch kids off in the evenings, in [...]

Flippity flop… Ezam can’t and now most probably can

Posted by | Uncategorized | Monday 4 August 2008 4:56 pm

If my memory serves me correctly, Ezam was told he is not qualified to stand for any party posts in UMNO as he has just join (re-join) the body.
So, if he cannot contest for party posts, how come he is qualified to stand as a candidate for a by-election so soon?
How can he be so thick faced to offer himself to be the giant killer at Permatang Pauh? Who in UMNO encourages this guy so?
Looks like there’s more than one unique Mr Flip Flop in UMNO…. or the deadly flippity flop syndrome has hit the whole UMNO Majlis Tertinggi… h o r r o r…

Birdman

Posted by | Uncategorized | Monday 4 August 2008 4:55 pm

For all my moaning I do rather like my house. It has history (it’s a 104 years old) and we have bags of room allowing me a decent space to write in.
However, I’ve realised my house does not like me.
From busted drains to leaky showers and collapsing ceilings the house has rarely missed the opportunity to put the boot in. I must admit that when we decided to do the back bedroom next I rashly thought “pefect, what could go wrong there”.
I never learn.
So we’re taking the vent off the wall and I notice a couple of feathers. Doesn’t bother me. I mention it to G, she’s less keen on anything bird related in the house and so decides to excavate the feathers. Only when she pulls on the feathers they don’t come out. They’re still attached. Yuk.
The bird had been there a while hence no smell but it was [...]
